IPL Auction 2024

Every year IPL has thrown new talents into the arena of world cricket. Some of them have managed to climb up the ladders of growth and create their own space in cricket. IPL has always been a blessing to the domestic and foreign players who are striving to imprint their names into the minds of the national selectors. Along with the uncapped players, the current international players also get a chance to revive their scorecards and make a comeback bid to the national team. Let us see some of the important player auction in IPL 2024.

As usual, some of the players made unexpected gains, while some found themselves on the other end. We have given the list of sold and unsold players in IPL 2024. The Australian pacers Pat Cummins and Mitchel Starc were sold for a whopping 20.5 Crore and 24.75 Crore Indian Rupee. Pat Cummins was bought by Sun Risers Hyderabad and Mitchel Starc went to Kolkata Knight Riders. Tamil Nadu allrounder Shahrukh Khan was bagged by Gujarat Titans for 7.4 Crore. He hasn’t made an impact as a bowler in IPL but has shown glimpses of his power-hitting abilities. But eventually, he was the leading wicket-taker of TNPL 2023. He took 17 wickets at an economy rate of 6.66 from 9 matches. The rising New Zealand allrounder of New Zealand, Rachin Ravindra was acquired by Chennai Super Kings for an amount of 1.8 Cr. It was a good call from the Chennai Super Kings. Sameer Rizwi, the 20-year-old Uttar Pradesh batsman was bought by CSK for 8.4 Cr. He had a good outing in Syed Mushtaq Ali's trophy hitting 18 sixes in the tournament. The Rajasthan Royals purchased middle-order Vidarbha batter Shubham Dubey, for an incredible Rs. 5.8 Crore. In Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy,  Dubey scored 221 runs in seven innings with a strike rate of almost 190. Travis Head, who was unsold in IPL 2023 was sold for 6.80 Crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Jharkhand wicketkeeper, Kumar Khushagra was another surprise purchase by Delhi Capitals. The 19-year-old wicket keeper went for 7.20 Crore.

The auction went well for some players, but for others, it didn’t turn out to be as sweet as expected. Players like Steve Smith and Phil Salt went unsold in the auction.  Phil Salt who had 2 centuries and 2 half centuries in 20 T20I matches was unlucky to miss out. The New Zealand all-rounders Kyle Jamieson and James Neesham also went unsold.

Bangladesh Vs New Zealand 2023

 History of Bangladesh Vs New Zealand Test Series

After a decent performance in the recently concluded World Cup held in India, New Zealand had reached Bangladesh for a 2 tests series. But the Kiwi fans found to their dismay that the former test championship winners didn’t find the going easy on Bangladesh soil. New Zealand lost the first test to Bangladesh but managed to fight back and draw the two-test series 1-1.

In all 19 tests played between New Zealand and Bangladesh, New Zealand has won 14 tests and Bangladesh has managed to win only 2 tests. 3 Tests were drawn. Bangladesh managed to draw a test against the Kiwis for the first time in the 2008-09 series. The second test match of the series held at Mirpur was drawn. The bad weather conditions helped the Bangladesh team to extract a draw. Batting first, New Zealand has managed to get 262/6 with half-centuries from Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum. But in reply, Bangladesh was restricted to 169/9 with Daniel Vettori getting 5 wickets. In the second innings, the match ended in a draw when NZ were at 79/1.

Bangladesh managed to draw the test series  0-0 in 2013-14 when New Zealand visited Bangladesh. In the first test, New Zealand made 469 in the first innings. Kane Willamson and BJ Watling made centuries for the Kiwis. In reply, Bangladesh made 501, with Mominul Haque making 181. New Zealand declared their second innings at 287/7. Bangladesh's innings reached 173/3 when the test match was drawn. In the second match of the series, Bangladesh made 282 in the first innings. New Zealand replied with a large total of 437. Bangladesh managed to score 269/3  in the second innings and the match ended in a draw. For the first time in history, Bangladesh managed to draw a test series against the Kiwis.

The first victory for Bangladesh against NZ in the test came in the 2021-22 series and that too in the backyard of Kiwis. In the first test of the 2021-22 series, NZ reached a total of 328 in the first innings with the help of 122 from Devon Conway. But in reply, Bangladesh made 458 runs with Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque, and Litton Das scoring half-centuries. In the second innings, New Zealand was restricted to 169 with the fiery spell from Ebadot Hossain. He took 6 wickets for 46 runs. He was provided some ample support by Taskin Ahmed, who also took 3 wickets for 77 runs. In the final innings, Bangladesh chiseled down the required 40 runs with the loss of 2 wickets. So Bangladesh tasted their first test victory against NZ. But in the second match of the series, Bangladesh couldn’t repeat their heroics. In the first innings of the second test match, NZ managed to post a mammoth total of 521/6 riding upon 252 from Tom Latham. But Bangladesh was all out for a paltry total of 126 and was made to follow on. Trent Boult took 5 wickets in the first innings. In the second innings, Bangladesh were all out for 278, despite a fighting century from Litton Das.  So after the heroics of the first test match, Bangladesh met with an innings defeat in the second match. The series ended in a draw.

Bangladesh Vs New Zealand 2023

The latest concluded test series between Bangladesh and NZ has also ended in a draw. Bangladesh managed to win the first match of the series. Bangladesh made 310 runs in their first innings. Mahmadul Hasan Joy top scored with 86. Glen Philips took 4 wickets for 53 runs. Now, in reply, New Zealand scored 317 getting a narrow lead of 7 runs. Kane Williamson was the hero for the Kiwis in the first innings, where he top-scored with 104. In the second innings, Bangladesh posted a good total of 338 runs. Batting in the fourth innings on a sub-continent pitch was always a hard task for the visitors. The New Zealand innings ended in 181 runs, with Taijul Islam picking up 6 wickets for 75 runs. Bangladesh won the match by a huge margin of 150 runs.

Bangladesh had a great opportunity to win their first test against NZ. But NZ managed to ruin the plans of Bangladesh by winning the second match of the test series by 4 wickets and the series was drawn. In the first innings of the second test, Bangladesh made 172 runs. The NZ spinners  Ajaz Patel, Mitchel Satner, and Glenn Philips took 8 wickets between them. In reply, NZ made 180 in their first innings, thanks to an 87 from Glenn Philips. For Bangladesh Mehidy Hasan and Taijul Islam took 3 wickets each. In the second innings, Bangladesh scored 144 runs. But apart from Zakir Hasan who scored 59, none of the Bangladesh batsmen could apply themselves. In the final innings, NZ had to chase 137. The ball was gripping and turning squarely. New Zealand batsmen had a stiff task on their hands. At one stage NZ found themselves at 6 wickets down for just 69 runs. Bangladesh had hopes high for a probable victory. But the hero of New Zealand for the first innings, Glenn Philips had some other plans. Unfortunately for Bangladesh, Glenn Philips was dropped when he was yet to open the account at the slips by Shanto off Mehidy Hasan. Glenn Philips went on to score an unbeaten 40 and was well supported by Mitchel Santner. Santner scored 35 and both helped NZ cross the lines. The test series ended in a draw 1-1. Bangladesh had their chances to win the series, but fortune didn’t go their way. Glenn Philips stood in between Bangladesh and their test series victory. The pitch for the second match has raised some eyebrows. The pitch provided turn and bounce for the spinners in a great way, and some of the deliveries were unplayable. Even the NZ Skipper Tim Southee expressed his displeasure regarding the quality of the pitch. Nonetheless, foreign nations may find it tough to adjust to the turning pitches of the sub-continent, as the Asian countries find it tough to adjust to the pace and bounce of the English, Australian and South African pitches.

Bangladesh cricket has improved a lot in recent years. Said that, they need to improve their winning percentage against major cricketing nations. As they say winning should be a habit. Currently, Bangladesh fans hope for a victory during every test match. This scenario should change. The hopes should be replaced by ‘expectation’. Bangladesh has enough experience under their belt and they should make it count. Relatively less experienced countries are making better performances in recent times and Bangladesh has the resources and quality players to surge ahead. The dismal performance in the recently concluded World Cup 23, where they could win only 2 matches in 9 games shows the lack of application and intent. Whereas far less experienced team like Afghanistan managed to win 4 matches.

The Business of Cricket World Cup 2023

The 2023 Cricket World Cup hosted by India was the first ever 50-over World Cup hosted by India on its own. The earlier world cups held in India in 1987,1996 and 2011 were co-hosted by some of her neighboring nations as well. So let us analyze the event's profits and economic opportunities. The 45-day event helped in bringing about $ 1.6 billion into the Indian economy.

Role of ICC

The International Cricket Council (ICC), is the main stakeholder of the event. The expense of ICC for the event is about $10 million. This includes the prize money given to the teams and, the remuneration of different officials including umpires, match referees, and commentary panels.

At the same time, ICC has also many sources of revenue. The revenue obtained from the auction of broadcasting rights of the event is the main revenue. As we know, the event was broadcast by Star Sports. The ICC has granted the broadcasting rights to Disney Star from 2015 to 2023 events for $ 1.98 billion. And of course, these broadcasting channels can get back this capital from the advertisements. Now the ICC also gets revenue from the different sponsors of the event. The different sponsors include global, category, and social media sponsors. PhonePe, Dream11, LendingKart, Coca Cola, etc. are some of the sponsors of the event. ICC also gets 1% of ticket sales for the event.

Role of Host Nation- India

The host nation is the second stakeholder of the event. The host nation is expected to reap benefits due to the staging of such events. The hosting of ICC CWC23 has helped in boosting the Indian economy. Although exact figures are not available, the economists say that at least an amount of $ 1.6 Billion has reached our economy. The event attracted a lot of foreigners to our country and this has certainly helped our tourism and hotel industry. Is not only foreign, but domestic cricket fans have also played their role in this growth. The hotel rates and flight booking rates touched great heights during many high-voltage matches. ICC demands a tax exemption from the host nation for the event. However, the Indian government has responded in negative and has levied an extra 23% surcharge on broadcasting costs.

 

Role of BCCI

BCCI plays a great role in hosting the event. They took care of the renovation of the 10 stadiums in which the matches were held. That cost them around Rs 500 Crore. In addition, they had to arrange for the travel and accommodation expenses of all participating players and staff members. The BCCI had an expense of almost Rs 1500 Crore. Now the sad part for BCCI is that if the Indian government is reluctant to provide tax exemption to ICC, BCCI should pay the tax amount to ICC. The tax amount sums to about 950 Crore Rupees. This can make the event a financial loss for BCCI. If BCCI fails to pay the tax amount to ICC, the can deduct the amount from annual profits to be disbursed to BCCI.
